Bad Gögging

There is certainly evidence that the ancient Romans had it good here. But it is likely that the Celts, a few centuries earlier, also recognized the healing properties of the sulphur springs that bubble up from the ground in Bad Gögging. Today, the town is one of the leading thermal spa resorts in B...

Country: Germany

Dating back two thousand years, Bad Gögging is a spa town where history, health and relaxation are in perfect harmony. The medieval Church of St. Andrew, which was originally built on the site of the ancient thermal baths, is an unusual example: upstairs a Romanesque monument of cultural significance, downstairs a Roman Baths Museum illustrating the room layout and typical heating system of a Roman bath house.

Thermal baths in Bad Gögging

The Limes Therme, the focal point of Bad Gögging's spa resort and one of the most popular thermal baths in Bavaria, was built around a spring that was discovered in 1976. With a Roman sauna, beauty salon, Dead Sea salt grotto and every conceivable therapy and exercise facility, the Limes Therme offers all-round health and fitness. There are also a number of fantastic wellness hotels, a small golf course, the new spa centre and rehabilitation facilities utilising the sulphur springs, thermal waters and natural mud. The focus on wellbeing extends even to the shopping centre, where you can relax to the full and enjoy regional and international cuisine and fine wines at a wide choice of restaurants. If you'd prefer to get active in the fresh air, Bad Gögging is the starting point of the Via Danubia (the Bavarian section of the Danube Cycle Route) and finishing point of the Limesweg (Limes walking trail).

Other excursions include the Danube Gorge near Weltenburg, Prunn Castle, Riedenburg and the picturesque Altmühl valley. Bad Gögging is located just outside Neustadt an der Donau in Lower Bavaria. It is about two kilometres from the Danube, on the Abens river, and roughly halfway between Ingolstadt and Regensburg.

Accommodation and cuisine

There is a wide selection of restaurants – everything from a typical Bavarian country inn to a golf resort – serving Bavarian, German and international cuisine.

The main sights in Bad Gögging include the Roman Baths Museum beneath the Romanesque Church of St. Andrew and the open-air museum at the excavation site of the Abusina Roman Fort dating from 80 AD. You can also follow the trail of the Romans at the reconstructed Limes Tower at nearby Hienheim. The tower marks the point where the fortified section of the Roman Limes border wall ends, the remains of which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper-Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. Modern 'windows in time' provide an insight into everyday life at the neighbouring Abusina Fort. The Benedictine abbey of Weltenburg, home to the oldest abbey brewery in the world, and Prunn Castle, one of Bavaria's best-preserved castles and the place where an original manuscript of the Song of the Nibelungs was found, both date from the Middle Ages and are of interest not only to history buffs. Beer fans are well catered for too, with Kuchlbauer's Bierwelt in Abensberg, whose unusual architecture is the work of artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and the German Hops Museum in Wolnzach.

Bad Gögging: ancient Roman spa

Roman settlers used to bathe in the healing sulphur springs that bubble out of the ground here. And nearly two thousand years on, Bad Gögging is a spa town where history, health and relaxation are in perfect harmony. St. Andrew's Church, which was originally built on the site of the ancient thermal baths, is an unusual attraction: upstairs a Romanesque relic, downstairs a Roman Baths Museum. The Limes Therme, the spa resort's focal point and one of the most popular thermal baths in Bavaria, was built around a spring that was first discovered in 1976. With a Roman sauna, beauty salon, Dead Sea salt grotto and much more besides, the Limes Therme has everything you need for health and wellness. The town also offers fantastic hotels, a small golf course, a new spa centre and rehabilitation facilities utilising the sulphur springs, thermal waters and natural mud.
