Ertingen

There is plenty to suggest that settlements existed long ago in Ertingen: archaeological finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, traces of Celtic culture, the burial sites of a pre-Roman dynasty, and a Roman settlement. Clearly, people have always been drawn here, even though back then, the lakelan...

Ertingen made a good living from gravel mining for many years until eventually it was no longer worthwhile. This left behind five groundwater lakes, however, which the locals soon started to use for swimming. As a way of regulating this 'unofficial' and often dangerous use of the lakes, the Schwarzachtalseen recreation area was founded. The lakes were renaturalised to provide the public with a swimming lake, a water sports lake and three natural lakes. A café was opened, followed later by the Palm Beach restaurant and then a water playground with a pirate ship and climbing rocks. The result: a fantastic leisure attraction that perfectly combines nature conservation and tourism. The water quality of the swimming lake is regularly monitored and is always found to be excellent. For quieter times, you'll find beauty and tranquillity in the expanses of forest around Ertingen, for example at lake Blindsee, a popular destination for walkers. There is also lots to see in Ertingen itself: beautiful half-timbered buildings, the baroque Chapel of St. Mary from 1755 and the Michel Buck Stube, a museum devoted to the Ertingen-born dialect poet, folklorist and doctor Michael 'Michel' Buck. In the village of Binzwangen, four kilometres west of Ertingen, it is well worth seeing the Church of St. Lambert and the statue of St. Nepomuk on the bridge over the Danube.
